On May 19, 1941 the first Board of Trustees held a meeting to organize the Randolph Township Library.  Mrs. Pearl Whitaker became our first librarian.  On display this month we will have our library’s history on display in the Memorial Case.  Carl Hinshaw will be providing a display of Heyworth history for our front display next week. If you have a club, collection or hobby you would like to display at the library we would love to offer our display cases to the community.  Stop by and see Alice or Beth.

May Closures:

May 17 we will close at 5pm for Hey Days.  Don’t forget to get your armband tickets at Village Hall or the First State Bank in Heyworth.

May 19 the library will close at 12 noon, but will be at a table in the HeyDays Merchant Tent from 1-4 pm.

May 28 the library will be closed in honor of Memorial Day.

READING is SO DELICIOUS! 2012

The summer reading fairies have been hard at work, the Heyworth Public Library is properly decorated, school talks have begun, flyers are being distributed at the schools, our website heyworthlibrary.com is fully loaded with all programs available, and our wonderful business partners/sponsors have been busily donating MANY prizes. This summer looks more DELICIOUS than ever at your Heyworth Public Library. Stop in and sample the good things we have planned! We have six programs that children must sign up for before attending.  We will begin sign ups on May 19^th at the library.  Reading for prizes will begin June 4^, and this year there is NO sign up to read for prizes.  Just read books from Heyworth Public Library, fill out your reading log, and turn in before end of day on July 28^th at the library.

Heyworth Public Library is excited to begin a LEGO Time program this summer.  LEGO Time will offer youth builders an opportunity to join together, create, and share inspiration. We are asking for the community members to look through their closets and donate LEGOS/Duplo’s their children have outgrown to help supplement our supplies.  You can drop off LEGOS at any time during regular hours.  If you would like to make a monetary donation to help purchase new LEGOS or more LEGO reading materials we would welcome your support as well.

Monthly Genealogy and Local History meeting

Wed., June 20 at 10 am.  All are welcome to help preserve Randolph Township history.  Come join us as we organize the historical records and materials we have collected at the library, and begin an oral history project.  If you have local history or genealogical items to donate to the Alexander Room please see Alice or Beth at the library.  You can view the current title holdings on our website under the Local History and Genealogy link.

Our first Randolph Township Cemetery Tour was a success with 39 persons attending and fabulous weather; it made for a memorable day.  Much gratitude and thanks go to the Randolph Township Cemetery Board for letting us pursue this venture, The Full Gospel Tabernacle Church for the use of their bus, to Retired Rev. Richard Gray for driving the bus, and to Lona Soice and Charlotte O’Dea for all the research and time they devoted to informing and entertaining us with the incredible history in our own backyard.  If you missed this wonderful journey, but would like to read about our adventure, we are selling the brochures for $2.00 to cover our cost of paper.  You can also check out our latest addition about the founder of Randolph Township: Gardner Randolph of Illinois by Jacquelyn Hansen.  This book is available at the library.  Anyone interested in helping preserve our local history can meet at the library May 16, at 10:30 in the Community Room.

• Family Story time for 3 yr – 2^nd grade:  Tuesdays 10:30am – 11:30am
• 3^rd – 6^th graders: Thursdays 2pm – 3pm
• Jr/Sr High:  Saturdays 11am
• Children – Adult will be able to read for prizes during this time.

Sign up today to reserve your seat on the tour bus.  We will board a bus from the library parking lot and visit two-three sites, then break for lunch at the Heyworth Library Community Room (bring your own brown bag), and then finish our tour.  We will end at the Heyworth Cemetery where a number of veterans dating back to the Revolutionary War through Vietnam are at rest.  Those who want to stay at the Heyworth Cemetery will be welcome to stay and walk back to the library parking lot at their leisure or depart at 2 pm via the bus.  This is a free event – donations are welcome.

Thank you to the State Bank of Bloomington, Heyworth Branch for their generous donation towards updating our local history records and materials.  The library recently used some of these funds to purchase Gardner Randolph of IL and Mitilda’s Story by Jacquelyn Hanson.  Jacquelyn is a decedent of Gardner Randolph, whom Randolph Township is named after.

A new length of time to check out DVDs began last week.  NEW DVDs will remain at the current 3 day check out.  All other DVDs will now be available for 7 day check out and patrons can place holds on these as well.  If you don’t see the movie you want to watch, you can ask a librarian to hold it for you when it does come in the library or place a hold at your convenience from your own computer through our website.  We can also borrow older movie titles from around the state that we don’t own.
